Italian Protesters Hang An Enormous Banner Of Mario Monti As A Vampire

Student demonstrators are protesting in Italy today over education cuts imposed as part of the Italian government’s big fiscal consolidation program.

A group of the students went to the top of the The Altar of the Homeland, a famous Roman monument, and hung a big banner of Mario Monti depicted as a vampire over the side of the roof:

Italian newspaper ANSA reports that the protests turned violent:

Students protesting in Rome on Friday said that they were beaten with clubs and manhandled by police as they demonstrated in the Porta Portese neighbourhood.

Four police also reported injuries.

Digos security police said they have detained and are identifying several student organisers of the “unauthorised” protests.
