Mariano Rivera’s devastating ACL tear during a freak batting practice accident has left the baseball world, and more specifically New York Yankees fans, in a serious state of shock and sadness.Simply type the search terms “Mariano Rivera” into Twitter to see how gloomy everyone is.
Yankees captain Derek Jeter even said so himself:
“He’s going to be missed. There’s no other way to put it. You can’t replace him.”
But do not fret Yankees faithful, all is good and it comes in the name of David Robertson.
Robertson has allowed 0 runs on 7 hits, struck out 18 batters, and only walked 3 in 11 innings of work as the setup man so far this season.
Over his career, Robertson has a 2.87 ERA, an astounding 288 strikeouts in 213 innings, with hitters only mustering a .218 batting average against him.
Also worth keeping in mind, before Mariano became the most incredible and accomplished closer in the history of Major League Baseball he was a mediocre rookie starter who gave up too many home runs.
Rivera’s transition to great setup man and record-setting closer weren’t a sure thing by any stretch.
On the other hand, Robertson has a consistent track record as a great reliever and will have no trouble taking over for Rivera.
Yes, it’s sad to see the greatest pitcher in Yankees history and best closer of all time possibly end his career prematurely due to a freak injury, but everything will be fine.
