Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) has already outperformed expectations for Monday’s Iowa caucuses.
Rubio was widely expected to finish third, but current results have him just one point behind Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump.
With 97% of the results in, according to CNN, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) leads the pack with 28%. Trump follows with 24% and Rubio places after that with 23%.
The only other competitor close to double digits is retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who has roughly 9%.
The Des Moines Register’s “gold standard” poll of the Iowa caucuses, released last weekend, gave Rubio just 15% support among likely caucus-goers.
Historically, beating expectations has been one of the most valuable accomplishments for candidates coming out of the early-voting states. Cruz’s lead over Trump is also quite the prize, after polls predicted that Trump would win.
