Instagram’s cloud servers are based in Northern Virginia via Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud. It’s the same service that’s used by Netflix and Pinterest.¬†Yesterday, a severe storm swept through the area and wiped out the servers, taking Instagram down with it.

Today, Instagram is still struggling to get back up and running.

“We are continuing to work to recover the remaining EC2 instances, EBS volumes and ELBs,” Amazon said this morning.

The power outage, which runs from Indiana to New Jersey and is leaving more than 2 million people without power, is expected to last for a few days.

You can still take pictures with Instagram but you can’t share them.
