Critics have pronounced comedy the winner of this year’s new TV season.

But the best in drama is yet to come.

Case in point: HBO’s “Luck,” an amped-up horseracing drama that pits Dustin Hoffman against the house.

Really, though — it doesn’t matter if you don’t care about horses or know a thing about betting.

“Luck,” which has a sneak peek December 11 before the regular season kicks off in January, is incredibly tempting — not least because (judging from the trailer) it nails a tone of scandalous beauty while maintaining a modern setting. (Lately, it seems like networks can’t make lush, fall-into-it drama without conjuring the past.)

But enough about what we think. Here’s what we know.

Dustin Hoffman is at his fiery best. This teaser is under a minute long, and he still manages to upend a table.

Dennis Farina and Nick Nolte are in the show, too (and if that doesn't convince you HBO is crushing on old badass types, consider this: They're currently developing a vehicle for Don Johnson.)

Leave it to TV to find a hot jockey: Chantal Sutherland makes her acting debut in the series.
