The number of oil workers here in Williston, ND now far outnumber the locals who have lived here all their lives. Burdening an infrastructure designed to support 12,000 residents, the town now has more than 30,000 people consuming a pretty fixed amount of goods and services.
I caught the town doctor and this local farmer Doug Nenow ice fishing on a local river Saturday. They had nearly reached their limit of northern pike and crappie, but took time between hauling up fish through holes in the ice to offer an insight into how their lives have changed.
Doug explained mineral rights to me, the elderly neighbours and friends he’s lost to rent increases and a cratering quality of life in town. After the pleasantries were exchanged and he’d shown me the inside of his ice fishing shed he started to open up.
I’ll let you know all he had to say when I get back to BI on Tuesday.
