The suspect behind the London Bridge attack on Friday afternoon was wearing a fake suicide vest before officers shot him dead, police have confirmed.
The man was shot dead by specialist City of London police and died at the scene, confirmed Neil Basu, who heads the counterterrorism unit at the London Metropolitan Police, in a Friday briefing.
Police are treating the attack as terrorism. The motive remains unknown.
Police responded to a stabbing near London Bridge shortly before 2 p.m. that day, and say that multiple people have been injured. The conditions of the people stabbed are not known at this time.
Multiple videos circulating online appeared to show a man being held down by other people before being shot at by police. Insider has chosen not to publish that footage.
Another terrorist attack, in which eight people were stabbed to death, had taken place in London Bridge in 2017. The three attackers had also worn fake suicide belts before they were shot dead by armed police.
