Google, Netflix And Microsoft Propose DRM For HTML5 (Geek)
As Flash finds its way out the door, HTML5 has quickly become the standard for building things on the Web. The biggest of the Web content companies— Google, Netflix and Microsoft— have all collaborated on a proposal at the W3C to allow for Digital Rights Management (DRM) to be added to the HTML5 spec. All three all have things they would like to see protected from pirates. There’s plenty of reasons to want to look in this direction for a solution, but Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) in HTML5 are likely not that solution. The proposal outlines a plugin that would need to be either installed or included with the installation of a browser, which is similar to how Silverlight was implemented. The Rise Of Mobile Will Change B2B Content Marketing (Social Media Today)
For the B2B content marketing world, this movement to mobile brings up a major issue: since there is so little advertising space on mobile sites, how can you reach your audience on their mobile device? There are two ways to view this issue:
- App makers and mobile sites need to get more creative about advertising space
- Content marketers need to focus on how to get content into news feeds
Content marketers need to understand that getting their content into social media newsfeeds has far greater benefit than simply just being more visible. In fact, the movement towards mobile presents one of the most exciting opportunities in B2B content marketing in a long time: the opportunity to generate earned media. Facebook Finishes 2012 As Number One U.S. Mobile App (comScore)
The latest comScore Mobile Metrix ranking of the top mobile apps by audience shows that Facebook finished the year strong to capture the number one position from Google Maps.
Of course Apple’s decision to replace Google Maps with Apple Maps on iOS 6 also caused a decline in Google Maps usage in October, which is largely responsible for the position swap. Meanwhile, Google Maps has been clawing its way back the past few months after getting reinstated on iOS 6, so look for the competition for the number one spot to heat up as we head into 2013.
More Consumers Use mobile phones To Make Shopping Decisions (Pew via Mashable)
A study conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that more than half of adults used their mobile phones to call someone for advice, look up reviews or compare prices. According to Pew, more cell owners (46 per cent) called a friend or family member compared to 27 per cent of those who used their phone to compare costs. Young adults ages 18-29 are much more likely to online price match and seek product reviews, with 56 per cent checking reviews during the 2012 holiday season. Women are more likely than men to make calls for recommendations, and smartphone owners beat out regular cell users for price matching. Consumers in suburban areas would rather engage in a phone call than research the product, while urban shoppers tend to look online before deciding. Read >>
iOS 6 Adoption On Target To Be The Fastest Adoption (Onswipe via TechCrunch)
iOS 6.1 arrived just a couple of days ago, bringing little beyond support for new international LTE carriers and movie ticket purchasing via Siri in the U.S., but it’s already been installed on a significant percentage of active iPhones, iPads and iPod touches out there.

Mobile Banking Firm mFoundry Sold For $120 Million (TechCrunch)
Some consolidation in the world of mobile payments and mobile banking: mFoundry is getting acquired by FIS for $120 million. FIS— a banking and payment provider that works with some 14,000 banks worldwide — already had a 22 per cent stake in the company; today’s deal will see it paying for the remaining 78 per cent in cash, for a total valuation of $162-$165 million. mFoundry provides mobile banking and mobile payment solutions to some 850 banks and retailers, including Bank of America and Starbucks, which uses some of mFoundry’s technology to enable mobile payments, which complements the partnership that Starbucks has with Square. Investors in mFoundry included companies like GRP Partners,Intel, Motorola and MasterCard. Read >>
Andriod And iOS Dominate China Too (Strategy Analytics via TNW)
We’ve heard time and time again that Android and iOS have a duopoly over the smartphone market. Google’s slightly newer mobile operating is still growing like crazy and Apple’s iPhone is still loved by many. Yet in China, things are getting out of hand for consumers: 98 per cent of smartphones shipped last quarter were powered by one of the two. The latest figures come from Strategy Analytics, which says mainland China smartphone shipments grew 64 per cent annually to reach 53 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. Extrapolating backwards, that means there were 34 million shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011. Of those, Strategy Analytics says Android and iOS powered 79 per cent. Android accounted for a record 86 per cent share of all smartphones shipped in China this past quarter while Apple iOS followed with 12 per cent share. Read >>
