Another Chinese Leader Mysteriously Disappears

In September there was one key question on every China-watcher’s lips — “Where is Xi Jinping?”For two-weeks Xi, the next President of China, was mysteriously absent from public life. rumours swirled about behind the scenes bickering, heart attacks, an injury from a thrown chair, and even an assassination attempt.

Xi returned, but we may never know really what happened, and now a new mystery may be in the works, however.

According to multiple reports in Chinese press and overseas websites, the newly installed propaganda chief Liu Qibao. The University of Hong Kong’s Chinese Media Project has a good summary of events, revealing that Liu has been out of the public eye since November 27, and appears to have missed a number of foreign engagements.

Reports in Taiwanese press suggest that Liu did not make the foreign trips because “something suddenly came up”, adding it was a “secret”. Liu was regarded as a conservative choice for the propaganda position.
