Breakfast TV co-host Lisa Wilkinson has left the Today Show in a sudden exit that has surprised fans and industry executives alike.

Having worked as a duo with Karl Stefanovic for 10 years, there are early reports her departure follows a pay dispute.

The Herald Sun reports that six months of drawn-out contract negotiations between Nine and Wilkinson ended yesterday after failing to meet an agreement.

Earlier in the year Wilkinson had demanded an equal salary to Stefanovic.

The Herald Sun reports Stefanovic is on $2 million a year, while Wilkinson is believed to have been on a contract worth $1.1 million.

Wilkinson made the announcement on Twitter on Monday night.

And later added that she will join Channel Ten’s The Project in January.

Stefanovic opened the Today Show on Tuesday morning by saying it was a “very big day for us on the show and a very big day for Lisa Wilkinson … plenty more to say about that later in the program”.
