It had been a relatively quiet couple of months for Lindsay Lohan, and it seemed like she was really sinking her teeth into her latest high-profile role (which has the potential to be a trainwreck) as Elizabeth Taylor in the Lifetime biopic Liz and Dick. However, it was only a matter of time before something dramatic happened in the troubled starlet’s life and throw yet another wrench in her comeback plans. On Friday, TMZ reported that the actress and her assistant were cruising in a rented Porsche Panamera when they collided with a truck driver. The second the trucker saw who was behind the wheel, he lawyered up — and now, it’s only a matter of time before a lengthy legal battle ensues with Lindsay’s trusty attorney Shawn Chapman Holley once again taking the reins.
Many out there may want Lindsay to fail, but the reality of the situation is she’s a talented young girl who seems to get herself caught up in a barrage of troubles. If you’re confused about these so-called “troubles” and where they all began, we’ve made it simple for you.
Check out a detailed look back at Lohan’s many legal ballyhoos over the years. Just for good measure, we’ve also included some of her best courtroom photos — you know, the ones where she’s pulling out her best crocodile tears.
Back in February 2005, Lindsay Lohan had one of her first brushes with the law when a couple filed a personal-injury suit against the actress claiming they had been hurt in a traffic accident. This barely made the press, and no one had any idea what was to come...
In late 2005, everyone had already suspected that Lindsay (then 19) had been hitting the bottle and the Hollywood scene. However, in October of this year, La Lohan crashed into a van and was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
In January 2007, Lohan confirmed all of our suspicions and checked into rehab for the first time.
'I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health,' she said. 'I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time.'
However, months later, she crashed her Benz into a curb in Los Angeles and cops found cocaine on the scene. She checked into rehab again, checked out -- and headed straight to Vegas to party.
One of Lohan's most notorious scrapes with the law occurred in July 2007, when she was involved in a bizarre high-speed chase on the 405, coked out of her mind and possessing no valid drivers licence. The details of this incident are still confusing, but apparently Lohan got a little spooked by another car on the freeway so she decided to ride their tail for miles. A month later in August 2007, one of the passengers of the aforementioned chased vehicle sued Lohan for assault and negligence.
Later in August 2007, the verdicts rolled in. Lindsay was charged with seven misdemeanour counts related to the two DUI arrests. She had to spend one day in jail, serve 10 days of community and of course complete a rehab program. She is placed three years of probation, and issued the following statement,
'It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs.'
In 2009, Lindsay started getting sloppy. Showing up to probation hearings late, blowing off meetings with her legal counsel and more. Linds received more probation, and she began to loose jobs left and the right. In May 2010, the 23-year-old actress returned from Cannes after missing her hearing for a progress report on her probation for her August 2007 no-contest plea to drug and alcohol charges stemming from traffic accidents on May 26, 2007, in Beverly Hills, and on July 24, 2007, in Santa Monica.
At her probation revocation hearing at the Beverly Hills Courthouse on July 6, 2010 in Los Angeles, California, Lindsay was sentenced to 90 days in jail and 90 days in rehab for violating her probation. Here she is with Shawn Chapman Holley, her lawyer and one of the few people who has ever stuck by her. This woman is a trooper.
Lindsay Lohan arrives at the Beverly Hills Courthouse to serve 90 days in jail. What would you wear if you were about to head to the slammer? At least she left her patent leather Chanel bag at home.
After getting out of jail early for 'overcrowding,' Lohan screwed up again -- and failed a court-ordered drug test. In September 2010, the judge revoked her probation and set no bail. The legal system was officially fed up with her antics.
Not even done with sorting out the legal mess stemming from her probation debacles, Lindsay was in hot water again -- this time for allegedly stealing a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry store in Venice. In February 2011, her and Shawn Chapman Holley were at it again.
In October 2011, Lohan arrived at the Airport Branch Courthouse in one of the most hideous court outfits I've ever seen to plead no contest to a misdemeanour count of theft. Perhaps she should have taken a cue out of the Jackie O. playbook and not the Anna Nicole Smith.
Guess who's back, back again...In June 2011, Lindsay had to sit in front of the judge to prove she did not violate the conditions of her probation after she allegedly tested positive for alcohol. With a stroke of luck, she got off!
Guess what? Lindsay defied all the odds and attended court on January 17 and received a positive review from the judge following her probation efforts. You go, girl!
Judge Stephanie Sautner said Lohan completed all of her court-ordered requirements and let her go … with some advice.
'You need to live your life in a more mature way, stop the nightclubbing and focus on your work,' said Sautner.
Lohan was also told she would remain on informal probation until May 2014. If she got into trouble again, the actress could face up to 245 days in jail.
After crashing a Porsche Friday (she's OK), Lohan finds herself back in the hot seat for allegedly lying to cops that her assistant was driving. (Her assistant already told the cops the actress Lohan was indeed driving.)
Per her probation, she could face jail time.
