Less than half of all Americans know what ‘GOP,’ the common abbreviation for the Republican Party, stands for, according to a Vanity Fair/CBS poll released Monday.

It does not, as 7% of respondents believed, stand for ‘Grumpy Old People.’

Overall, only 45% of all respondents correctly identified that GOP stands for Grand Old Party. Barely half of all Republicans, just 51%, were even able to identify what their party’s shorthand name means. That number was slightly lower for Independents (47%) and Democrats (38%.)

30-five per cent of respondents thought it stood for “Government of the People,” making that the second most common response. Additionally, 3% thought it meant “God’s Own Party,” while 1% chose “Gauntlet of Power.”

The telephone poll was conducted among 1,165 adults between August 19 and 23.
