TheRoot.com has released the “2011 The Root 100 List” ranking the 100 most influential African-Americans in 2011. LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers is the highest-ranked athlete, coming in at number 36.Tennis star Serena Williams is the only other current athlete on the list at number 41.
Also on the list is former NBA player Kevin Johnson who is currently the mayor of Sacramento, California. He is ranked ninth overall.
The rankings consist of African-Americans between the ages of 25 and 45. They used a formula to calculate overall influence measuring each person’s Reach (“how many people this person touches through his or her work”) and Substance (“how much he or she enriched our lives and made the world a more interesting, fun, beautiful or just place”).
