They say if you want to win an Oscar, you better dramatically alter your appearance.
Charlize Theron in “Monster” ring any bells?
And what better way for a beauty-obsessed actress to show the world she’s willing to commit to a role 100 per cent than for her to shave off her beloved, well-kept locks?
“Sex and the City” actress Cynthia Nixon just shaved her head for her role in “Wit” on Broadway, Demi Moore did it in “G.I. Jane” and Natalie Portman went all the way for “V for Vendetta.”
Others such as Sinéad O’Connor and Amber Rose just feel most comfortable with a no-fuss head—and then there’s Britney Spears.
Cynthia Nixon debuted her new bald 'do on 'Live! with Kelly' last month. Though Nixon did battle breast cancer in real life, the actress chose to shave her head for her new role of a cancer stricken poetry professor in the Manhattan Theatre Club production of 'Wit.'
'I thought it was kind of going to be no muss-no fuss, but I have to shave it every day!' Nixon revealed to Kelly Ripa on the morning talk show. 'I was always kind of curious to see what it would be like...I like it, but I don't think I'm gonna keep it forever.'
Demi Moore shed her famous, long, brunette locks for the chance to kick butt with the guys in the 1997 film 'G.I. Jane' directed by Ridley Scott. The role was a huge switch from her previous work in 'Striptease' or 'Ghost, ' but it garnered Demi a lot of attention for still managing to look so good with no hair.
She didn't technically shave her head, but Cameron Diaz did don a bald cap for her heart-wrenching role in 2009's 'My Sister's Keeper.'
Cate Blanchett is known for completely absorbing the characters she plays. So what better way to understand a character than to shave her head for one? In the 2002 film 'Heaven,' the Australian-born actress shaved her head to play a women who runs from the law after attempting to seek revenge on a drug lord.
For her role in 'V for Vendetta' in 2006, Natalie Portman shaved her head to better portray her character Evey, a freedom fighter. Portman surprised the world by showing up to the premiere of the film sans hair and, obviously, still managed to look gorgeous.
Well this one is a bit awkward...
Britney Spears was in the midst of a breakdown when this bizarre act occurred. Spears shaved her head in front of tons of paparazzo and became a poster child for why being a child star is not always a good thing. But today, Brit's back on track with two monster hit albums and a new fiancé.
For the independent film '8 1/2 Women,' actress Toni Collette shaved her head to play a woman involved in the dramatic re-enactment of a famous film. Collette is known for her work in the Showtime series 'United States of Tara' or the supernatural thriller 'The Sixth Sense' but before those big roles, Collette starred in many a strange, low-budget film such as '8 1/2 Women' in which she bared her baldness.
To be fair, this model/socialite didn't shave her head for a role. She just seems to enjoy having no hair on her nicely-shaped head. Rose is probably most famous for having a high profile relationship with Kanye West, who she starred in this Louis Vuitton ad with, and is now dating another rapper, Wiz Khalifa.
After two iconic films, it only made sense to Sigourney Weaver to reprise her role as heroine Ripley for 'Alien 3.' In the film, Weaver sports a bald head to blend in better with male prisoners who haven't seen a woman in decades. This second sequel wasn't the best movie, but it did mark the start of a award-worthy career for director David Fincher.
Sinéad O'Connor has been sporting the lock-less look from the very beginning of her career. From eight albums to polarising views on religion, women's rights and war, it's hard to argue that O'Connor is one badass baldie.
It takes a lot of guts or a lot of crazy to go bald as a woman and some of these ladies sport the look for powerful roles in powerful films.
