Yahoo is firing 2,000 people today, and plans to fire many more in the weeks and months to come.Last night, new Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson chewed out top execs at the company for puttting him in this position.
Kara Swisher reports:
“At an internal meeting with top staff last night, Thompson — who has gotten what seems to be a well-deserved reputation for chewing folks out at Yahoo — was more direct with the execs gathered, berating them extensively for not delivering and getting the company to this sorry point.”
This seems like an odd decision on Thompson’s part. Sure, some of Yahoo’s top execs probably could have done a better job in the past few months.
Most of the Yahoo executives we can think of have only been at the company for a year or so themselves.
The truth is that Yahoo has been on the wrong trajectory for many years now – probably since Google took off on Wall Street and Yahoo started looking bad in comparison, forcing awkward lurches back and forth on strategy.
That said, it probably is some comfort to some of the many people being laid off today that their bosses are also having a rough day, and are being held at least somewhat accountable.
