Those who doubt that Twitter will eventually be worth more than $1 billion (our prediction) should note how fast it is expanding beyond tech circles and into the mainstream. This move is being accelerated by several big-name celebrities who have recently joined the service, gotten their friends involved, and quickly assembled thousands of followers.
For some of these folks, Twitter is no doubt just something that some marketing or PR person recommended that they’ll soon abandon. For others, however, it seems to have become a way of life.
Lance Armstrong, for example. Scroll back through Lance’s 463 tweets, and you’ll see that, yes, there’s undoubtedly some marketing benefit, but he’s clearly also doing this for the fun of it. And his 16,000 followers are probably glad to see another side of him (we certainly are).
Lance has pulled many of his cycling buddies into the Twitter club, and he’s probably adding followers as fast as anyone. But it’s worth noting that he’s still way off the pace:
Here’s what Lance has had to say of late. (And congrats on becoming a dad again!)
