Kraft has recalled 36,000 cases of Kraft Singles American cheese and White American pasteurised prepared cheese because people are choking on the packaging, the company said Monday.

Customers have complained that part of the plastic on the individually-wrapped slices is sticking to the cheese following removal.

Three people have reported choking on the plastic, according to the company.

About 36,000 cases of the recalled product were shipped by Kraft Heinz to retailers in the US, Puerto Rico and Grand Cayman, the company said.

“We deeply regret this situation and apologise to any consumers we have disappointed. Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it,” Kraft Heinz said in a press release. “They should return it to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund.”

Consumers in the US and Puerto Rico can also contact Kraft Heinz Consumer Relations for a full refund,at 1-800-432-3101.

Kraft had to recall some of its macaroni and cheese boxed dinners in March because some of the product was reportedly found to have pieces of metal in it.

According to a press release from Kraft Foods Group, 242,000 cases of “select code dates and manufacturing codes of the Original flavour of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Dinner” were flagged.
