As soon as Mike D’Antoni quit as head coach of the New York Knicks two names came up in any discussion regarding their next coach: Phil Jackson and John Calipari. The Knicks have a tough schedule ahead, but Mike Woodson has done a solid job on an interim basis.
Whether Woodson’s Knicks hold on to a playoff spot or not probably won’t make a difference to the front office.
New York is all about splashy, headline-grabbing hires.
Making reasonable decisions? Not so much.
Calipari saying he’s not interested doesn’t make a difference. Prominent basketball coaches are known for lying.
[Calipari] is securer in his insecurity now, but a desire to return to the NBA has never left. He has his NCAA championship now, and the New York Knicks have three necessities that Calipari desperately needs: a vacancy, a big stage and a blank check.
Wojnarowski goes on to explain how Calipari’s itch to succeed in the NBA (his 2+ years with the New Jersey Nets in the late 1990s were a failure) has never left and how much money matters to him. Calipari can use his current high profile gig with Kentucky to leverage the Knicks for a huge contract, Woj adds.
Another reason why the Knicks are a perfect fit for Calipari? Knicks owner James Dolan’s incessant need to reinvent the franchise and the fact that he won’t mind giving Calipari all the power.
Dolan can’t sell results as an owner, so he’s always selling a new saviour . Now, Calipari is no longer the failed ex-Nets coach, but the national champion Kentucky Wildcats coach.
Calipari enjoys having that power so much that while with the Nets, he had one of the team’s interns call into local radio shows under the moniker “Anthony from Hoboken,” Woj says. The intern would sing the coach’s praises and counter the anti-Calipari movement spreading throughout the New Jersey.
Although merely speculation, ALL of Woj’s points are valid.
It reminds us a bit of when Pete Carroll finally went back to the NFL. rumours of his return swirled for years. Teams came calling, but he said, “no thank you.” Carroll finally jumped when presented with the perfect opportunity with the Seattle Seahawks.
The Knicks may very well be Calipari’s perfect opportunity.
And for what it’s worth, one of his potential future Knicks players had some nice things to say about him recently.
