McDonald’s foray into the coffee business has been a massive success, proving that fast food chains can take a bite out of Starbucks and its coffeehouse kin.
Now, KFC wants a piece of the action too, reports Marketing Magazine.
The Yum! Brands subsidiary is firing up an ad campaign in the UK to get the word out about its Lavazza coffee (which it has sold since 2009), and help improve its image.
Will it work?
This looks like a test run for KFC, which is limiting itself to regional outdoor ads in England for now. The UK makes sense for KFC — McDonald’s just became the biggest coffee seller there, showing that consumers are willing to abandon the coffee-centric chains.
But it’ll take much more than a few ads to rid itself of KFC coffee’s low-quality perception. KFC needs to plan a significant branding campaign around its coffee for it to be taken seriously by the big boys.
