July's Top Credit Card Offers

It always surprises me when readers are complacent and allow subpar plastic to stay in their wallets, especially when excellent credit card offers are the norm — not the exception — in today’s highly competitive environment.

Even my dad was guilty of this: he was spending a significant amount each month using a credit card that offered no cash back, and it had a high interest rate, despite his excellent credit history. He recently remedied the “problem” by chopping up his lame card — something he signed up for at the height of the recession, when banks were putting out some fairly weak offers — and replaced it with a Chase Sapphire Preferred, and more recently, the Capital One Venture Rewards card. He likes both a lot, but has been using the Venture Rewards card more often than the Sapphire.

Below, a quick round-up of some of July’s top credit card offers, broken down into various categories. There are more great card deals over in Outlaw‘s offers portal, so be sure to check those out as well! A tremendous amount of time and energy goes into curating that list of offers.

Airline/travel credit cards: Of course, Capital One’s Venture Rewards is getting a lot of attention this summer — the Alec Baldwin TV commercial and an extensive print campaign help as well. That’s a great all-around travel rewards card, and new cardholders can get 25,000 bonus miles. I also really like the Delta Gold airline credit card issued by AmEx; you get 20,000 bonus miles after your first purchase, plus another 5,000 miles if you choose to add 2 additional cardholders to your account. More info on that one can be found on this week’s offers portal.

United Airlines and Southwest both have great airline reward credit cards as well; I really like United’s Mileage Plus program, especially now that the company’s merger with Continental has progressed to the point where your Mileage Plus miles can be used to book flights on Continental as well.

Cash back cards: I’ve been using my BankAmericard Cash Rewards card a lot lately. It’s issued by Bank of America, is a VISA Signature card, and offers a flat 1% cash-back on all purchases — with no ceiling or odd restrictions. Plus, the cash back posts to your account swiftly (normally within a couple days of when I make the request online I notice a cash back credit). Discover More is another great cash back card, offering 5% cash back bonus in rotating spend categories such as gas, restaurants, and groceries.

Flexible rewards: Chase Sapphire’s UltimateRewards points can be used toward flights, cash back, or a number of other rewards. I like that flexibility. Another good one is Citi’s ThankYou Preferred MasterCard; ThankYou points can be redeemed for cash back, select gift cards, and a wide range of other products.

While on the topic of Citi, their Dividend Card has a good promotion at the moment — you’ll earn $150 cash back after spending just $750 on the new card within the first 3 months, and there’s no annual fee. A 0% introductory APR is also offered.

Disclosures: We’re a credit card offers site, so obviously we maintain financial relationships with numerous banks and financial institutions, including some of the card issuers mentioned in this article. No relationship or position on Capital One, Citigroup, BofA, Chase, Southwest, United or Continental at time of publication.
