The 20-man Ascension police force quit after a series of attacks killed their chief and five other officers.According to CBS News, three months of attacks proved too much to bear and their departure leaves 13,000 people without local law enforcement.
About 60 miles from El Paso, the town is currently under state and federal police control.
The resignations appear to be part of Tuesday’s attack by gunmen that killed three officers.
Ascension’s police force was replaced last September after the mob killings of two teenagers kidnapped from a seafood restaurant. The public demanded the replacement believing officers were aiding the drug gangs.
The new force had been making efforts to stop kidnappings and extortions even installing a telescopic camera in the centre of town and digging ditches through back roads to prevent criminals escape.
