The man convicted of killing Stephany Flores and suspected of murdering Natalee Holloway is claiming his lawyer tricked him into confessing to Flores’ death. In letters recently released by his attorney Max Altez, Joran van der Sloot claims a previous lawyer told him he would be sentenced to only 15 years if he pleaded guilty, CBS 42 reported.
Van der Sloot also claims the Peruvian legal system didn’t take into account his mental health problems.
“My rights have been constantly abused,” he said in one letter, according to CBS 42.
Van der Sloot was sentenced to 28 years behind bars after he confessed to killing Stephany Flores in Peru. He is currently appealing his conviction.
Van der Sloot is the main suspect in teenager Natalee Holloway’s death, but police haven’t been able to conclusively tie him to the crime.
However, police aren’t backing off. Van der Sloot is set to be extradited to the U.S., where he is wanted for questioning in Holloway’s death, once he finishes his Peruvian prison sentence.
