Joe Paterno will be out as Penn State head coach within days or weeks, the New York Times reports. The report says that the board of trustees has not yet decided when or how Paterno will exit, but he will not coach beyond this season.
Nothing seems imminent, officials are just “discussing his departure” at this point.
Paterno came under fire this week after his former coach Jerry Sandusky was arrested on 40 counts of sexual child abuse.
According to a grand jury report In 2002, a graduate assistant told Paterno that he witnessed Sandusky sexual abusing a child in a shower. Paterno told his athletic director, but did not alert the authorities, the report says.
Paterno was scheduled to address the media at his weekly press conference today at 12:20 p.m.
But shortly after 11:30 that press conference was canceled by university President Graham Spanier.
ESPN reported that Paterno planned to answer questions about the scandal — PSU officials said yesterday that only football-related questions would be addressed.
