There have never been as many job openings in Australia as there are right now, be it measured in total number or as percentage of the labour force.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), vacancies rose by 1.1% to 244,900 in the three months to February, leaving total growth over the year at 9.2%.
However, as seen in the chart below from ANZ Bank, growth in vacancies by category was not uniform in nature. In some cases they grew substantially faster than the national average while in others they actually went backwards.
In total terms, openings for administrative and support services workers, at 44,200, are currently the highest for any category, followed by healthcare and social assistance, professional, scientific and technical services, retail, construction and food services at 29,400, 28,300, 20,800, 19,300 and 16,700 respectively.
The ABS says these estimate have a relative standard error of 25% to 50%, meaning they may not accurately reflect the level of vacancies reported.
