The New York Jets have fired general manager Mike Tannenbaum but will keep coach Rex Ryan for 2013, the team just announced. It’s a mild surprise.
Typically teams will do a full house-cleaning when they fire the GM.
The team fired offensive coordinator Tony Sparano yesterday.
So why’d Ryan keep his job when everyone else got axed?
The Jets were 6-10 this year, but almost all of the blame should be assigned to the offence and the make-up of the roster. Ryan coaches the defence, which still ranked in the top 10 in yards allowed despite losing Darrelle Revis for most of the year.
It’s unclear which changes will be made on offence in 2013. Tim Tebow is still under contract, but it’s assumed that he’ll be gone. Mark Sanchez will probably be on the team because he is owed $8 million guaranteed, but it’s doubtful that he’ll be the starting in Week 1 after this season.
