Here's how Jennifer Lopez keeps her hair shiny and healthy

Jennifer Lopez has been a beauty and style icon for more than 20 years, setting trends in fitness, fashion, and beauty every time she hits the red carpet.

While she’s never afraid to change up her look and try daring hairstyles – like a floor-grazing long ponytail or animal print hair colour – one thing is always certain: Lopez’s hair always looks shiny and healthy.

Along with her go-to hair gurus, Lopez has been open about how she maintains her hair’s health, revealing that she uses a mix of high-end products and drugstore staples to keep her strands in tip-top shape despite lots of styling.

Lopez feels sexiest when she’s rocking one particular hairstyle

Frequently listed on the top of many beauty lists, fans love Lopez’s hair in all kinds of styles, from straight and sleek to bangs and bouncy curls. But Lopez told People magazine in 2016 that she feels sexiest“when my hair is curly and I’m a little bit tan.”

Lopez is open about having a professional on call, but she also relies on drugstore staples

Lopez loved products by her late stylist, Oribe Canales, who told Shape magazine in 2014 some of the secrets behind their working relationship. He used Oribe Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray on Lopez, which retails for $US42.

And one of Lopez’s hair stylists, Lorenzo Martin, told Harper’s Bazaar Arabia in 2016 that some of the affordable staples he keeps in his arsenal include L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray and Psssst! Dry Shampoo, both of which retail for under $US15.

Of the powder spray, Martin said, “I use it every single day on almost every single client, every photo shoot. It’s the original Dry Shampoo from the 1960s! … By your fourth day, it will absorb all the oil. That’s my go-to product – love, love, love it.”

She keeps things low-key on her off days

When Lopez is not working, you won’t find her in full hair and makeup, as she favours a more low-key look featuring buns, ponytails, hats, and headscarves, whether she’s hanging with loved ones, relaxing by the pool or headed to the airport.

She credits her Bronx roots for sticking with her favourite off-duty styles, telling InStyle magazine in 2018, “Everything about growing up in the Bronx influenced me and is still with me today. I still wear big hoops and a lot of jewellery, whether it’s with a couture gown or with Timberlands. Also, how I do my hair. I’m still a ponytail, bun-on-top-of-your-head girl, which is all very Puerto Rican Bronx.”

Lopez has changed up her hair colour over the years, but largely keeps her honey blonde highlights intact

The “Second Act” star has worked with celebrity colorist Rita Hazan for years, and though Lopez started out her career with a natural deep brown shade, it was Hazan that suggested that she lighten up her look.

In 2014, Hazan told Glamour magazine, “I felt like [the dark brown] was too harsh for her skin tone and her personality. I created a honey-highlighted hair colour for her and people went crazy over it.” Of a summer 2014 switch-up, the stylist revealed, “I gave her a chocolate base with golden blond highlights and used my Ultimate Shine Blond Gloss on her. The darker base adds contrast to give her a cooler, edgier look.”

She first spotted grey hairs at the age of 23 and touches up her colour frequently

In 2011, Lopez told People magazine that she first started getting grey hair in her early 20s, “I was prematurely grey at 23. I have to have [my roots] touched up every couple of weeks. I’m kind of tempted to one day just let it go. It’d be kind of exciting! Maybe someday we’ll go really far away for like two months and I’m just going to see what it looks like.”

She’s not afraid of a drastic last-minute switch-up

Ahead of her appearance at the 2018 Met Gala in which she rocked a sleek, shoulder-grazing blowout, Martin told Allure magazine that the look came together at the last minute. “We cut it today, she said she wanted something different and the designer wanted something different. We wanted it to look fresh.”

He added, “We just decided it [the day of the event], like an hour and a half before she left. I didn’t even know, she didn’t even know we were doing it either.”

She’s also a big fan of mile-long locks thanks to extensions

Though she’ll sport a cropped look from time to time, Lopez also loves seriously long hair – in fact, per a post on his Instagram page, Appleton used 50-inch-long hair extensions on the “Jenny from the Block” singer at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2018.

She’s also tried out floor-length braids and waves, with Appleton crediting Hidden Crown Hair extensions to help create the jaw-dropping looks. Martin has used extensions by Great Lengths USA on the “I’m Real” singer.
