Shortly after President John F. Kennedy‘s assassination Jackie Kennedy recorded a series of tapes with historian Arthur Schlesinger Jnr that, at Jackie’s request, were subsequently sealed in a vault at the Kennedy library for 50 years.
The tapes are being released early after daughter Caroline Kennedy reportedly gave them to ABC News in exchange for their dropping a mini-series about the Kennedy’s starring Katie Holmes. Though by the sounds of it she may end up regretting the trade off.
According to the Daily Mail the tapes reveal that Jackie believed then vice president Lyndon Johnson, in cahoots with a group of Texas businessmen, was behind the assassination of J.F.K.
She also reportedly says that the President was having an affair with a 19 year old intern and that she had affairs with movie stars such as William Holden in retaliation.
Of those three things exactly one sounds believable.
There is no date set for the ABC broadcast even so it will likely be the latest in a series of blockbuster specials the network has broadcast of late, including specials on Casey Anthony and Jaycee Duggard.
*Update: ABC News says none of this is true.
“The tabloid reports about the content of the tapes are totally erroneous. ABC News isn’t releasing any content from those tapes until mid-September at which point it will be clear how off base these reports are. The actual content of the tapes provide unique and important insight into our recent past from one of the most fascinating and influential First Ladies in American history.”
