Israel scrambled jets and attempted to shoot down a drone Saturday morning as it crossed into southern its national airspace.Ian Dietch of the Associated Press reports that Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich, an Israeli military spokesperson, said Israeli systems on the grounded alerted the air force of the drones presence.
“We alerted jet planes that escorted the unmanned aerial vehicle and due to some operational considerations we decided to intercept the unmanned aerial vehicle in the northern Negev area, which has no population,” Leibovich told the AP.
Leibovich maintains that the source of the drone is unknown as of yet. Israeli has experience dealing with foreign drones—Hezbollah launched an Iranian made drone during the 2006 war in Lebanon, one capable of carrying payload.
Israel shot that drone down as well.
Hezbollah is also accused of assisting Syria’s Bashar al Assad suppress a rebellion in the deadly ongoing Syrian conflict. Hezbollah consistently denies these accusations.
