So much for consumers feeling disappointed about no iPhone 5.Apple announced it received 1 million iPhone 4S pre-orders on the first day it was available, the highest pre-order number ever for an iPhone.
For some context, last year it had 600,000 preorders on day one.
To put that number in context we spoke with Credit Suisse’s Apple analyst Kulbiner Garcha. He said last year Apple had 154 carriers at launch. This year it has 228 carriers, and the 90 carriers it added were smaller.
If you do the maths, Apple’s saw 3,900 pre-orders per carrier last year. This year it saw 4,400 per carrier. That’s a nice improvement when you consider that the new carriers are smaller. (It’s less impressive if you consider the installed base is much larger. The number of people with 3GSs is bigger than the number of people that owned iPhone 3Gs.)
Garcha was most interested in the 200,000 preorders for AT&T. He called it “significant,” noting AT&T’s customers could have run off to Verizon or Sprint. Even with competition AT&T is selling more iPhones than ever, which bodes well for Apple across the board.
In short, he says (what is pretty obvious if you look at the numbers): “Demand is strong.”
Update: For even more context, Apple sold 226,000 iPhones per day in the June quarter, and is probably selling 300,000 per day now, notes Apple commenter Sammy The Walrus IV on Twitter.
Update 2: Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray notes that Apple shut down iPhone 4 preorders last year at 9 AM eastern due to a computer glitch. He thinks this means Apple only got 75% of all the preorders it would have taken. 75% of 1 million is 750,000. Considering Apple has 90 new carriers, the year over year comparison doesn’t look all that great.
That said, iPhone 4S is still selling well, and we think it will continue to sell well. But, don’t go crazy thinking this year was a monster for pre-orders in comparison to last year.
