The highly anticipated iPhone 4S was set to go on sale online at midnight Pacific Standard Time tonight, but Apple’s online Store website didn’t return from “be back soon” mode until 12:40 AM PST.

For 40 long minutes, iPhone pre-order devotees waited and debated trying carrier websites instead.

But two of three carrier pre-order websites were down, or at best were unreliable.

As of 12:46 AM PST, Verizon’s online site is up, while Sprint’s site is reportedly inconsistent but working.¬†AT&T’s pre-order website does not seem to be working for most users.
