Apple will launch a smaller version of the iPad later this year, according to Bloomberg, citing sources with knowledge of Apple’s plans. The new tablet will have a screen that measures either 7 or 8 inches diagonally, but won’t have a high resolution Retina display like the new iPad.

No word on price, but it’ll likely be a lot cheaper than the $399 iPad 2.

The current iPad has a 9.7-inch screen.

Apple is expected to announce the smaller iPad in October.

The word comes as Google’s first tablet, the $199 7-inch Nexus 7 continues to get great reviews from the tech press.
