Instagram briefly went down

Instagram briefly went down on Friday.

The Facebook-owned social media app didn’t load for numerous users across the globe for at least fifteen minutes. Visitors to the website were greeted with the message “5xx Server Error,” while the mobile app brought up the error message “Couldn’t refresh feed” when users tried to load new photos.

As of publication time, this journalist’s Instagram was working again — though many on social media are still reporting outages.

The technical issue comes as Instagram prepares to transition from a purely chronological to an algorithmic feed — a change that has caused a significant uproar in the community.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
