I’ve always loved the vibrant cross-talk in our comment threads, which–on good days–is both informative and entertaining.
That said, the level of mindless bitching and attacks in some strings has increased of late, and it has become more annoying than amusing.
In recent weeks, I have also had several readers and contributors express dismay at the brainless hating that some of our commenters default to whenever they disagree with something.
The mindless bitching is, at best, cluttering up more thoughtful and intelligent comments, and, at worst, discouraging smarter commenters and contributors from participating.
So it’s time to fix that.
Our creation of a “Bleachers” section in which to toss particularly insulting or insipid comments has helped, but the velocity of comments has now reached the point where we can’t toss them there fast enough.
So here are a few new ideas we’re considering. Please weigh in below with thoughts and other ideas:
1. Creating an “inner circle” of approved commenters (“members”), whose comments appear first. Any reader can apply to become a member, and we will welcome as many deserving members as we can. (And we’ll kick anyone out who behaves for a while and then resorts to name-calling). We’ll probably start by keeping the rest of non-member comments on the same page, but eventually, we may move them to a special section like the Bleachers.
2. Permanently “Bleachering” the incurable idiots (unless/until they want to earn their way back to civilisation).
3. Giving our contributors control over their comment threads. Specifically, the ability to edit, “bleacher,” and delete comments as they see fit. We value our contributors extremely highly, and there’s no reason they should have to put up with being attacked just for having the balls to stick their necks out and say something interesting.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
