I’ll Have Another will not race in the Belmont Stakes.Doug O’Neill, the horse’s trainer, told the Dan Patrick show that the horse had a left leg problem, adding, “We ain’t taking any chances.”
The horse would have been going for the first Triple Crown since 1978 tomorrow.
Given how badly the sport is struggling right now, it’s a huge blow for everyone involved.
The horse has been having problems ever since he arrived at Belmont.
He was almost run down by a rogue horse on a warm-up jog last week.
There was also a minor controversy when the state of New York wouldn’t allow him to wear the nasal strip that he wore in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
The injury isn’t life-threatening, O’Neill said, but the horse may never race again.
“It’s not tragic, but it’s a huge disappointment,” he told Patrick.
Here’s the statement from NBC spokesman Adam Freifeld (via Scott Soshnick):
“While we are obviously disappointed that our show won’t feature I’ll Have Another going for the elusive Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes is still an iconic event on the sports schedule, and the NBC Sports Group broadcasts will treat it as such. We’re working now to adjust the game plan accordingly.”
