Global LGBTI Pride month may have ended as of the first of July, but Ikea is continuing the celebrations with the release of its iconic Frakta bag in a new rainbow design here in Australia.
Named ‘Kvanting’, the new bag design features six colourful stripes in a nod to the rainbow flag is part of the Sweden-headquartered retailer’s push to promote and support equality, diversity and inclusion.
In addition, the company is donating $20,000 to ACON, a New South Wales-based organisation that specialises in HIV prevention and support, as well as LGBTI health. It also provides support for mental health, domestic and family violence and alcohol and drug-related issues.
Ikea’s people and culture manager Richard Harries said the company believes equality is a human right.
“We’re committed to making sure everyone – our customers, co-workers, business partners – feel appreciated and valued, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity,” he said in a statement.
“We’re proud to celebrate and to support diversity, inclusion and equality, and we’re committed to creating stores and workplaces where LGBT+ Australians feel welcomed, respected and appreciated for who they are.
“Aside from a stylish splash of colour, the Kvanting bags are a true celebration of equality in Australia.”
Ikea first released the Kvanting in May 2019 ahead of Pride month, with 100% of proceeds going to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, De Zeen reported. Based in the US, HRC is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organisation, with more than three million members and supporters.
We're proud to join @HRC and Project THRIVE to help improve the lives of LGBT+ youth. At IKEA, we stand for #equality each and every day. https://t.co/9bVctT6NH9 #Pride #WorldPride https://t.co/RmnauGItpV
