Back in August, Hyundai revealed plans to create a dedicated brand for battery-electric vehicles called Ioniq. This week, the automaker showed off the first model of that brand.
Meet the 2022 Ioniq 5 â€” a stylish little SUV that comes in either an all-wheel-drive, dual-motor setup or rear-wheel-drive, single-motor setup, according to the announcement. With the rear-motor setup, Hyundai estimates the maximum range to be just under 300 miles.
Size-wise, the Ioniq 5 comes within spitting distance of the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4. Hyundai did not announce pricing at this time but did say that the Ioniq 5 will be available in “selected regions” during the first half of this year.

The 2022 Ioniq 5 is the first model in Hyundai’s dedicated battery-electric vehicle brand, Ioniq.
It is an all-electric SUV that’s built on Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform.
And, no, these are not renderings of a concept. They’re photos of the real car that’s going to production.
There are two battery pack options: a 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh.
You can get it in a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, which produces a claimed 302 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque.
Or a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup, which produces a claimed 215 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.
When using the 72.6-kWh battery and rear-drive setup, Hyundai estimates the Ioniq 5 to return between 292 and 298 miles on a full charge.
The Ioniq 5 uses both 400- and 800-volt charging infrastructure.
With ultra-fast charging, it can return to 80% of its battery from 10% in a claimed 18 minutes of charging.
The interior is airy, spacious, and cleanly designed. It features a 12-inch infotainment screen and a 12-inch digital gauge cluster.
The seats, door trim, floor, armrests, and headliner are made from sustainable materials like recycled PET bottles, plant-based yarns, natural yarns, eco-processed leather, and bio-paint with plant extracts.
The electronically-adjustable front seats can recline quite far.
That centre console is called the Universal Island, which can slide back by as much as 5.5 inches.
The thickness of those front seats was also reduced so second-row passengers can enjoy more room.
You can also equip the Ioniq 5 with a solar roof.
Following the Ioniq 5, we can expect the Ioniq 6 (a sedan) and the Ioniq 7 (a large SUV). All fully electric, of course.
Hyundai did not announce pricing for the Ioniq 5 for now, but Motor Trend thinks it will start at above $US30,000.
