We spoke with an angel investor earlier this week who said most of his/her portfolio companies are run by “kids.”And these “kids” fill their startups will lots of fun kid-like things: ping pong tables, pool tables, games and sometimes slides.
Out of all 40-some companies, not one has this incredibly crucial department: Human Resources.
“It’s crazy,” the investor said. “Someone gets pregnant and they have no idea how to handle it. Or someone gets sick, and they have no idea what the company should offer them. An employee will quit one day, and it seems like it comes out of the blue. They’re so focused on recruiting that they forget you actually have to keep employees happy and maintain company culture. There’s no one having regular check-ins with employees to make sure they’re happy once they’re hired.”
