The minimum wage in every state, ranked

Flickr/Pictures of MoneyMinimum wage varies by state.
  • Although the federal minimum wage remains at $US7.25 an hour, several states have far surpassed that minimum.
  • To keep up with the rising cost of living, 18 states increased their minimum wages at the beginning of 2018.
  • Currently, only Georgia and Wyoming have minimum wages below that of the rest of the country.

The minimum wage is a deeply polarising topic. A $US15 minimum wage was hotly debated in the presidential primaries and although some states like Massachusetts have enacted bills that will ensure a $US15 minimum wage by 2023, the current federal minimum rests at $US7.25.

Most states follow the country’s lead with a $US7.25 minimum wage. According to the Economic Policy Institute, if the federal minimum wage accounted for the actual growth of the economy it should be at $US19.33 an hour now.

To address the minimum wage issue, 18 states increased their minimum wages at the start of 2018 to keep up with the growing cost of living and the current state with the highest minimum wage is Washington, at $US11.50 an hour.

If you’re planning a move to the state with the best-earning potential, the actual highest minimum wage is in the nation’s capital. Though not a state itself, DC’s minimum wage is the highest at $US13.25 an hour.

There are also interesting variables within states. Some cities have higher minimum wages than the state as a whole. For example, the New York state minimum wage is $US10.40 an hour, but the average hourly worker in New York City makes $US13 an hour and that number is set to increase to $US15 by the end of the year.
