Setting up an official Twitter account for business or personal use is an easy process — even though it may seem daunting at first.

Twitter provides a registration and onboarding wizard to guide you through each step that must be completed. You can even skip some sections and return to them later.

How to set up a Twitter account for business or personal use

Visit or download the Twitter app, and click Sign Up to get started. The registration wizard will guide you through the process. The registration is a five-part process, but not all information is required to complete account setup.

How to register your Twitter account

1. In the first screen, you’ll enter a name for your account as well as your birthdate and a phone number or email address. The name you enter will become your account username, commonly referred to as a handle or username —which you can always change. The birthdate and phone number (or email) will be kept private. 2. Choose your ad display preference. Checking this option enables Twitter to serve personalised ads based on your online and offline activities. See Twitter’s terms of service for more information. No matter what you choose now, you can change your selection anytime from account settings.

3. In step three of the wizard, you will be given an opportunity to review or change account information previously entered. Click Sign Up to confirm the information.

4. You will be asked to verify your phone number before you can continue through the registration process. When prompted, click OK to verify your phone number. A text message will be delivered within minutes. Enter the verification number you received to continue.

5. Finally, you’ll be asked to create a unique password for your Twitter account. It must be 6 characters or more.

Next, you’ll be prompted to upload a profile picture. Profile pictures should be no larger than 400×400 pixels. You can choose to skip this step if you like.

Select your interests and who to follow

Once you have set up a profile, you will be prompted to search for topics that interest you. You can search or click topics you are interested in reading about. Selections in this step may influence the topics and users Twitter suggests for you in the future.
