When emojis began to take off and infiltrate modern messaging, it was exceedingly easy to download emoji packs that would plug into your phone’s keyboard, providing easy access to those images and emoticons.
PopKey is an iPhone keyboard that does the same thing, but with GIFs.
The app takes advantage of iOS 8’s third-party keyboard support, giving you access to thousands of GIFs whether you’re chatting with iMessage or composing an email.
Navigating PopKey will be familiar territory if you’ve ever browsed through emojis on your keyboard. Once you’ve installed the app, simply head over to Settings > General > Keyboards, and then tap “PopKey” and you’re ready to go.
Using PopKey is just like choosing the perfect emoji during a conversation, you can swap between tabs in order to quickly find the GIF you’re looking for. If you find a GIF online that’s not on PopKey, you can upload it.
The “Popular” tab let’s you search using keywords such as “happy,” “not amused,” or “facepalm.”
The “Featured” tab lets you browse trending GIFs.
Once you’ve chosen a GIF you like, you just tap it and PopKey will copy it to your iPhone’s clipboard.
Then, all you need to do is paste it into iMessage or email, and PopKey will format it nicely so your GIFs don’t vary in size.
Here’s what it looks like in action.
The “Recent” tab keeps track of the GIFs you use the most, and you can also heart your favourite GIFs and they will show up in the “Favourites” tab.
When you need to switch back to your normal alphabet-based texting or emojis, you can just tap the international globe key to swap out keyboards.
PopKey is free to use, but you’ll need to have Apple’s iOS 8 operating system installed in order for it to work, and you’ll need an iPhone 4S or later as well.
If you want to give PopKey a try, you can head on over to the App Store.
