Staying in touch with specific groups of people can be vital, whether you’re getting a project off the ground or just making sure you don’t lose touch with old friends.

But sometimes email is just too cumbersome a tool for messaging multiple people – and that’s when a separate group contact can come in handy. GoogleGroups is one tool that you can use to meet that need.

You can use GoogleGroups to do things like email with colleagues or work contacts, host group discussions, organise meetings, and collaborate on projects.

Groups are fairly customisable – they can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. That will all depend on what you group’s needs are, and how you choose to set it up.

Here’s how to create and customise a Google Group, and send the group an email:

How to create a Google Group

  • Email list:This allows users to post to the group through email, as well as open the group and posting directly to it.
  • Web forum:This allows users to receive updates via email, but they have to post to the group directly. It also includes advanced moderation tools.
  • Q&A forum:This allows users to ask questions in a Group, which will others can then answer. Questions can be upvoted and marked as resolved when they’re answered.
  • Collaborative inbox: Topics are known as a tasks and assigned to a specific member of the group, who can resolve or reassign them.
