This week could be one of the biggest ever for the art world: Edvward Munch’s haunting portrait “The Scream” will be auctioned off Wednesday and could set a major record.Sotheby’s, which is selling the work, has estimated that it could sell for around $80 million. That’s the highest pre-sale estimate ever set by the auction house, according to the Wall Street Journal.
And some oddsmakers are saying it could go for as much as $200 million, an insane sum considering the current record for a painting sold at auction is $106.5 million, for a Picasso.
But we want to know what you think. Will the world’s billionaire collectors kick off a huge bidding war over the work, or will the much-hyped sale be a total flop?
Email your estimate for the sale price of “The Scream” to [email protected] by midnight EST on May 1.
The reader who comes closest (excluding buyers’ premium) will win a $50 gift card to Amazon.com.
