Some may say PSY‘s “Gangnam Style” has worn out its welcome; however, the numbers suggest otherwise. The singer’s viral sensation hit 300 million YouTube views on Friday and has topped the UK charts, so we tracked how his single went from a South Korea hit to an International obsession.
We’ve marked down dates when the video hit landmark views at (for the most part) 25 million intervals and were blown by the exponential rate at which the song continues to grow two months after its initial July 15 debut on the video sharing site.
While it took nearly a month for to hit 25 million views on YouTube, it now has no problem gaining nearly that same amount in three days time. The video has been gaining at about an average of 15 million views per day since midway through September, and it shows no signs of stopping.
Currently, “Gangnam Style” has slightly more than 336 million views and will most likely hit 400 million by the end of the week.
We also took a look at how “Gangnam Style” has specifically grown in American interest by gathering U.S. downloads of the track since its debut via Nielsen Soundscan. As of last week, PSY’s hit has been downloaded 638,000. At $1.29 per iTunes download, that’s roughly $823,020.
