In a bizarre moment, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) interrupted a dramatic and apparently unscheduled live call from blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng to let Chen know Christian Bale was thinking of him.As Chen, who was calling from the hospital where he remains confined, appeared to start in on a response to Smith’s message that the U.S. would continue to support his efforts to leave China, Smith interjected:
“Before you answer, Christian Bale, the great actor, called one hour before this hearing to convey his solidarity and concern for your wellbeing and that of the rest of your family,” the multi-term Congressman said.
Fu uses the phrase “Bian Fu Xia” to translate “Christian Bale.” Bian Fu Xia is the Mandarin name for the movie “The Dark Knight.”
China previously criticised Bale’s attempt to visit Chen, according to the New York Times.
“If anyone should be embarrassed it’s the relevant actor, not the Chinese side,” Mr. Liu said, according to Reuters. “What I understand is that the actor was invited by the director Zhang Yimou to attend premiere. He was not invited to any village in Shandong to create news or make a film. If he wants to create news, I don’t think that would be welcomed by China.”
