Yeah, this actually happened. At the annual House Democratic retreat, House Democrats recorded a parody of “Let’s Stay Together” for President Obama, with lyrics altered to reflect praise and support for the president.

Oh goody.

Obama famously sang a line from the Al Green song at a fundraising event last month, unintentionally boosting sales for the record, and creating a soundbite that would be replayed on TV about a billion times. Everyone liked it except for Newt Gingrich, who said Obama should cut it with the cute stuff. Then Rachel Maddow called Newt Gingrich racist again.

The audio from the Dems’ CD hasn’t been released (Obama has the only copy), but Jonathan Allen at Politico got a copy of the lyrics:

“We’re … We’re so in love with you …

We’re going to help you make it through …

By turning the red states blue …

You make us feel so darn proud …

We want to shout it out loud …

Let’s bring the country together …

Supporting you whether … whether times are good or bad … happy or sad

Let’s bring the country together …

Supporting you whether … whether times are good or bad … happy or sad

Let’s … Let’s stay together.”

Lyrics by Rep. John B. Larson (D-Conn.) and Terisa Griffin, with “apologies to Al Green.”

We’re not sure whether this is the best thing ever or the worst thing ever. The only thing we know for sure: the world needs to hear the House parody.

And now, because it never gets old, let’s watch Obama sing one more time:
