Strong winds at Sydney airport forced the cancellation of dozens of flights yesterday and the problem looks set to continue on Friday, with more cancellations causing further knock-on effects.
Hundreds of passengers were stranded yesterday after more than 70 domestic flights were cancelled and more delayed by up to 90 minutes. A further 20 flights were cancelled this morning.
The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled its wind warning for Sydney after gusts above 50km/h were measured earlier this morning. Gusts above 60km/h yesterday forced the closure of two of the airport’s three runways.
International flights have not been affected.
The delays and backlog come as private schools in Sydney break for spring holidays and Sydney Swans fans fly to Melbourne for tonight’s MCG finals clash against Geelong. Virgin Australia has cancelled four flights to Melbourne today and other flights are currently delayed.
The airline said passengers should check its Flight Status page for the latest details.
