Who is Mrs. Herman Cain?Following this weekend’s sexual harassment story from Politico it’s a question a lot more people are asking.
And considering Cain’s top tier status it’s amazing how little we know about his family. Did you even know he had a family? He does!
His wife’s name is Gloria and they have been married for 43 years.
Back in May before Cain launched his campaign he warned the press that the family von Cain — he and Gloria have two children — would not be following him on the campaign trail. And he has kept that promise (which was presumably easy to do in the early days when no one was taking him seriously). Until now.
The aftermath of the sexual harassment report has apparently been severe enough that Gloria Cain is prepared to take centre stage.
She will appear this Friday on Greta Van Susteren‘s Fox show. Whether she will be accompanied by her husband is unclear.
Said Cain during his interview with Greta last night:
“You will meet my wife publicly in an exclusive interview that we are currently planning and anticipating, but you won’t see my family out on the campaign trail on a day-to-day basis … My wife represents that calm and tranquility that I look forward to seeing when I get home. She will be introduced in terms of some limited exposure, but it’s not her style for her to be with me on every campaign stop because, number one, it’s gruelling, and I want her to continue to be the nucleus for that calm and tranquility that you want for your family.”
So who is this calm and tranquil nucleus? Here’s what we know about Gloria Cain so far.
She and Herman met at a party when he was at Morehouse College and she a freshman at Morris Brown.
In his book ‘This Is Herman Cain!’ Cain says that they met on a street corner: “Let’s face it, I was first attracted by her looks. And then I figured out she was also smart.” Cain says Gloria brushed him off at a party they both attended that same night and they basically lost touch for a year, and then resumed dating after they crossed paths again on campus.
Says Cain: “It was magic from that moment on, so I didn’t go out with anyone else again. … we dated and dated and dated.”
The Cains married in 1968, a month after Gloria graduated from college. They have two children: Melanie (39) and Vincent (33), and three grandchildren. A quick Google search reveals that Vincent has a LinkedIn profile but not much more information is available about either of the children.
Here’s how Cain describes family life in his book ‘CEO of Self: You’re in Charge!’:
“Two was actually the right number of children for us. When two people get married, two equations of happiness are added together. If they match perfectly, which is very rare, you get a marriage bonus, as in ‘two plus two equals five.'”
And here’s how he describes Gloria’s participation in his political life in the three-page chapter titled ‘Gloria’ in ‘This Is Herman Cain’:
“Gloria continues to be a steady source of devotion and inspiration, never more so than now … Some people have certain expectations concerning the traditional politician’s wife, though, and I’m often asked: ‘Where is your wife? Why isn’t she campaigning with you?’ ‘She is at home,’ I answer.”
Come Friday this will no longer be the case. And even though Cain appears determined to limit press access to the “nucleus for calm and tranquility” in his life, one wonders how realistic that goal is.
Meanwhile, based solely on his various descriptions of her, Gloria does not exactly sound prepared to meet the onslaught of media attention that is waiting for her.
