None of the sexual harassment accusations against Herman Cain so far have the salacious details that capture the imagination of the public. But the Cain story dominated last week. Politico wrote over 90 stories on the allegations.

The other candidates are gasping for air.

“We’re not able to talk about jobs, we’re not able to talk about our position in the world, and that hurts — that hurts the American people,” said Jon Huntsman on Meet the Press this weekend. He could have just said, “It’s hurting me.”

Cain’s poll numbers have turned sour. But Gloria Allred’s announcement that this afternoon she’ll introduce another woman who is accusing Herman Cain of sexual harassment will keep Cain front and centre. The only hope of candidates like Perry, Gingrich and Huntsman is that Allred’s press conference causes Cain to drop out almost immediately. colour me sceptical. Cain has shown himself adept at turning these accusations into big-fundraising days.

Mitt Romney must be loving every minute of this.

Yes, the rise and fall of several conservative-alternatives has exposed Romney’s weak claim to be able to lead the Republican party. But the longer a damaged Herman Cain leads the cable-media news-cycle, the less time a more experienced candidate has to do damage to Romney’s lead in the early primary states.
