Tennessee men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl is working without a contract while the NCAA investigates his staff’s recruiting practices, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.Pearl admitted to two violations:
- He placed more phone calls to recruits than he was allotted.
- He hosted then-high school junior Aaron Craft – who initially chose Tennessee but switched to Ohio State in time for this, his freshman year – at his private residence. The NCAA does not allow coaches to interact with high school juniors off-campus.
Still, Tennessee has no plans to fire Pearl. He’s beloved on campus and known for pacing the sidelines in an orange sports coat drenched in sweat. He’s also painted his face and chest while sitting in the student section at a Tennessee women’s basketball game.
More importantly, he’s posted a 126-46 in five seasons.
But he’ll have his $12.5 million contract reduced by $1.5 million over four seasons.
