One of the lesser-known facts about the much-hated Obamacare penalty tax is this:Amish people don’t have to pay it.
Neither do Mennonites or Hutterites.
Or members of Indian tribes.
In the case of Amish folks and the other Anabaptists, it’s apparently related to the fact that they don’t have to pay Social Security tax (You can read the story of why they don’t pay Social Security here). I don’t know why members of Indian tribes don’t have to pay the penalty tax. If you do, please explain below.
And in case you’re fuming about having to pay the Obamacare penalty tax and you’re not Amish or a member of an Indian tribe (and don’t want to convert), here are some other ways to be exempt:
- Make less than $9,500
- Have a “hardship”
- Work for a company that only offers insurance plans that costs more than 8% of what you make
